FAQ

The Dairy Production Stabilization Act of 1983
The Dairy Checkoff was created when the United States Congress passed the Dairy Production Stabilization Act of 1983 . This Act authorized a national producer program for dairy product promotion, research, and nutrition education to increase human consumption of milk and dairy products and reduce milk surpluses. The program is funded by a mandatory 15-cent-per-hundredweight assessment on all milk produced in the contiguous 48 States and marketed commercially by dairy farmers. It is administered by the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (National Dairy Board). The Act provides that dairy farmers can direct up to 10 cents per hundredweight of the assessment for contributions to qualified regional, state, or local dairy product promotion, research, or nutrition education programs.

United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA)
A federation of 18 state/regional dairy promotion organizations created for the purpose of more efficiently and effectively utilizing dairy checkoff funds through the development of a Unified Marketing Plan among state/regional checkoff organizations. Prior to the UDIA, state/regional dairy checkoff organizations developed and implemented programs with very little coordination among like organizations

The UDIA is funded through voluntary membership dues and partnership agreements of 18 member state/regional dairy checkoff organizations. The ADA/DC of Nebraska pays membership dues and provides additional funding to the UDIA. A Board of Directors consisting of dairy producers from member state/regional dairy checkoff organizations is responsible for oversight.
